How To Connect Mic & Guitar To Computer?

Everyone can record by themselves today. Starting out musicians can record their demos and even polish up a song to sound as though it was recorded in a top class studio. Okay but first things first. How do I plug my microphone and guitar to the computer?

The reason many people can now record on their own is because of the price of audio equipments which are getting more affordable. However are you getting cheaper sound with cheaper equipments?

Connecting Guitar to Audio Interface

Guitar > Audio Interface > Computer

First You Need An Audio Interface

An audio interface is basically an external sound card for your computer. You can’t plug that 1/4 inch jack of your guitar or plug in that XLR jack from your microphone to your computer right? An audio interface do just that. Plug your 1/4 inch or xlr jack into the audio interface and the audio interface converts that analog signal into digital signal which are then sent to your computer.

Which Types Of Audio Interface Then?

There are many types of audio interfaces in the market from small ones. Personally I recommend getting an audio interfaces with at least 2 inputs and 2 outputs. Having at least 2 inputs give you the option of recording in stereo as well thus giving you a future proof investment.

If you want to do bigger recordings where you will be able to record from 8 microphones at one go or more, consider getting the audio interfaces with more inputs and outputs. Check if the audio interface is expandable and stack-able with more units though. Always buy equipments that you can grow and expand with!

Still Need A Pre-Amp?

Most audio interfaces today comes with built in preamps so you can start plugging your microphones to record with studio quality sound. However as you progress in your producing career, you might want to but a dedicated tube pre amp to add in your recording chain. Dedicated hardware preamps DOES make a difference, but they come with a price. My advice is to learn your equipments well then slowly reinvest in your home studio with your music.

Alright, enough talking, go get started.
