What A Blast! Computer Music Workshop KL
It was an interesting and fun weekend with the group at the Computer Music & Business Workshop KL last weekend! Meeting some of the members together with some new faces in the workshop was fun. It’s a wonder too to find out that many of the participants have professional working backgrounds but have really strong passion in music! Now that I salute.
The workshop kicked off with some theory basics, essentials to go into composing. The basics definitely kick started some members and also served as new learning material for the rest. We also had a 10-minute composing mini competition where the participants had to pair up and come out with group names. We then had the participants to vote for their favorite music and the group with the lowest score had to do the chicken dance! (the chicken dance was skipped, unfortunately)
Then the eating session came during the break where we went over to a nearby coffee shop to have some light food and drinks while sharing ideas, talking about music gears and instruments. It was quite a unique mix as we had people with different backgrounds who play & compose different genres of music as well.
Back in the workshop, to keep the excitement up and bring the people together we had an icebreaker. Basically participants had to draw their own face on a piece of paper which is then passed randomly to the others. They then had to match people with the drawings. It was much fun and we had lots of laughs while learning that branding yourself is important.
With laptops, headphones and midi controllers brought into the workshop, we were making some music on the fly and we had some pretty good ideas from the participants as well. However, time caught up really fast and we neared towards the end of the workshop, where some business lessons and tips where shared and explained.
Some of the business lessons includes where to upload music, where to get a website set up together with some ideas of marketing music with email newsletters. It was a shame that time didn’t allow to go through the walk-through lessons of setting up websites and email marketing campaigns.
However, there are webinars scheduled this month so the lessons would be continued in the webinars.
It was a great fun workshop day and everybody learnt something new and useful. We would be going back to KL for another workshop sometime next month for another round of awesomeness and learning. However for now, there are two upcoming workshops in Penang. The first would be the 2 day audio & video workshop in Suntech City Penang and the later would probably be a repeat of the Computer Music Workshop KL in Penang!
